A very interesting weight made from a provincial coin of Maximinus I from Ninica-Claudiopolis
Lot 1855
Byzantine Weights, Circa 5th-6th centuries. Weight of 1.5 Nomismata (?) (Bronze, 22 mm, 6.21 g, 12 h), a circular coin weight with serrated edge made from a Roman Provincial issue of Maximinus (235-238) from Ninica-Claudiopolis. IMP MAXIMINVS PI (sic!) Laureate head of Maximinus I to right. Rev. NINIC CLAVA Athena standing front, head to left, holding Nike in her right hand and shield in her left. RPC VI online 6920. SNG Levante 627. A highly unusual and interesting piece. Very fine.

Although its weight of 6.21 g is quite unusual, the fabric of this very interesting piece clearly marks it as a Byzantine weight. Perhaps it served as a coin weight of 1.5 Nomismata, or, alternatively, as a commercial weight
